Official airport car parks or a private one? An honest comparison

There are two realistic ways to leave a car while you fly from Brussels Airport. You can use one of the airport’s own car parks, or you can use a private car park nearby with a shuttle. Plenty of articles will tell you the private option is always better. That is not quite true, and it depends on the trip.

What the official car parks are genuinely good at

Proximity. You park, you walk, you are in the terminal. For a one-night trip, or a very early departure where every minute of sleep counts, that is worth real money.

They are also the simplest option if your plans might change at the last minute, and if you are travelling with someone who would find a shuttle transfer difficult, the shorter walk can matter more than the price.

The trade-off

Cost, and it scales badly. The daily rate that looks acceptable for two days becomes hard to justify across two weeks, because you are paying a premium for proximity on every single day, including the twelve days you are not there.

What a private car park is genuinely good at

Cost across longer stays, and predictability. The rate is lower per day, and because you book in advance you know the total before you leave home.

The shuttle is the thing people worry about and it is usually the thing they stop noticing after the first trip. You are dropped at the departures area, and on the way back the shuttle collects you and returns you to your car.

The trade-off

A transfer. It adds time at both ends, and it means arriving at the car park earlier than you would arrive at the terminal. If you are the kind of traveller who arrives with ten minutes to spare, that adjustment is real.

A rough rule of thumb

For one or two nights, the official car parks are defensible. Somewhere around three to four days the numbers start favouring a private car park, and beyond a week it is usually not close.

The longer you are away, the less you are paying for parking and the more you are paying for the walk.

Questions worth asking either way

Is the shuttle included for everyone in the car, or priced per passenger? Does a larger vehicle cost more? What happens if the return flight is delayed by several hours, or arrives the next day? Can the booking be changed?

Those four answers tell you more about the real cost than the headline daily rate does.

Where we fit

We run a private car park a few minutes from the terminal with a free shuttle, which puts us squarely in the second category. For a weekend, we will not always be the obvious choice. For a week or a fortnight, we usually are.

If your dates come back as unavailable, we also run a second site nearby that often has space when the first does not.
